Hello, Girl Scout leaders and volunteers! This is an exciting Fall. There is a LOT happening here and all over the council.

The Warren County SU Meeting
Events, events, events plus Recruitment
Welcome, new readers
New Thumb Drives, VE Addendums, and Calendars, Board Member needed,
New Newsletter from Tracey D.
"Floating, Free, and Fabulous!" - butterflies...
and... Sensitive Issues... got any?

I love the tent pix (above). Though I have never peeked through my tent and looked at a skunk. But I did see one up North once. We gave it lots of room. And it didn't get scared. Unlike when it or a relative met a dog that was next door one summer. Long story.

The Warren County Service Unit Meeting
We had SO many people at the meeting last night we almost did not fit. This is a good sign, I think. Troops got Incentive T-Shirts (Early Bird, I think) and Tracey shared lots of news. We found out Lost River Cave is looking for Girl Scouts for service projects, and that if you go as a TROOP to the Boat Ride, you can go for $5 per girl. This is a GREAT deal.

Some volunteers do not have the Shield the Vulnerable online course taken yet. This is a MUST, because now anyone who has not taken it cannot work with the girls. Period. Until they show they have taken it. It was suggested to keep a list of who has taken trainings plus their expiration date in the Troop Folder(s). Also, if anything happens, and your adults have not taken this class, Council will not back you.

Recruitment is happening starting tomorrow. Troop members signed up to help. They could also use girls to help in uniform with crafts and more.

Warren County Schools (NOT City Schools) are now charging a $330. per year Custodial Fee for troops meeting in their schools. A volunteer suggests writing the School Board about this or (Mike?) Wilson.

If your troop is registered before Sept. 1, they may order Toffee-Tastic cookies through E-Budde. How many to order? You just guess, and may pre-order as many as you want from September 8th - September 25th. You will pick these up with your initial order.

I heard that events are now cut off at 3-4 weeks before an event (?) I will double check about this. It used to be a week before last year. But now we have a new computer system. So I'd call or email about it to find out for sure. AND register early for events, just in case. I have also heard that there is no automatic "cancellation" that will be on the event pages this year, at least right now, so call the PLC or the event person to make sure it is still happening before you go, at least right for now. They are fixing glitches all this year.

Troops are encouraged to bring their girls to the Service Unit meeting to talk about awards like Bronze, Silver, or Gold. Let Tracey know you are coming. She is at SUM

I got to teach the game "Concentration" at the meeting. It brought back memories. I will teach it better next time. I think I went too fast.

We heard about upcoming events, including the Mother-Daughter weekend and the Hot Rods Overnight event that already occurred. (See the UNofficial Calendar for dates, some trainings and events at the link above at this blog.)

We need to have an Adult Board Member nominee for this area. If you know someone who would make a good Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana Board member from this area, let Sue Lewis, who is on the GSK Board Development Committee, know at slewis45@inbox.com.

Troops do not need to refill their ACH forms this year, but new troops must fill them out.

Troops at the Service Unit meeting received a thumb drive, an Addendum, and a Calendar. These are 1 per troop.

Welcome, new readers! I will try to invite more people here soon from my Girl Scout list.

Butterflies... floating, free, and fabulous.
We all thought about butterflies and heard a story about butterflies at the SU meeting too  - - - and also were asked, how are they like our wonderful Girl Scouts? We thought of lots of words for what describes a butterfly - beautiful, colorful, changeable, morphing, flighty, and sometimes annoying (!) But it was fun to think of all the great qualities our Girl Scout girls have. Then we heard the story of how somebody tried to "help" a butterfly get out of her cocoon and really didn't help it at all, because being freed too early did not let the butterfly develop the muscles it needed to be able to fly. And how because of this, it's sometimes it's better to let the girls try themselves, even though they could fail or take a long time doing something. It's harder for us to watch them fail, but better in the long run for the girls to try to do things themselves. It helps them learn so much better, so they can finally fly and become the adults they were meant to be.

Neat story.

Oh - almost forgot.

Sensitive Issues - do you have them?
The Warren County SU Mgr, Tracey, says, "Do you have a sensitive issue? If you ever have a sensitive issue that you can't bring up at the Service Unit meeting, just let me know about it. I have experience dealing with sensitive issues, and I can come up with solutions." Thanks, Tracey! PS Her main email is sum.warren.ky@gmail.com. This goes to her and maybe 1-2 of her team too. An FYI. I don't have her phone number, she may prefer emails. If you want to talk on the phone, ask her if she is OK with that by sending her an email.

Until later,

Betsy
